AndtodinnerMartincame,makinghimselfagreeablewiththefatwholesalebutcherandhisfatterwife—importantfolk,they,likelytobeofusetoarisingyoungmanlikeHermannVonSchmidt. Nolessabait,however,hadbeenrequiredtodrawthemtohishousethanhisgreatbrother-in-law. AnothermanattablewhohadswallowedthesamebaitwasthesuperintendentofthePacificCoastagenciesfortheAsaBicycleCompany. HimVonSchmidtdesiredtopleaseandpropitiatebecausefromhimcouldbeobtainedtheOaklandagencyforthebicycle. SoHermannvonSchmidtfounditagoodlyassettohaveMartinforabrother-in-law,butinhisheartofheartshecouldn’tunderstandwhereitallcamein. Inthesilentwatchesofthenight,whilehiswifeslept,hehadflounderedthroughMartin’sbooksandpoems,anddecidedthattheworldwasafooltobuythem.
AndinhisheartofheartsMartinunderstoodthesituationonlytoowell,asheleanedbackandgloatedatVonSchmidt’shead,infancypunchingitwell-nighoffofhim,sendingblowafterblowhomejustright—thechuckle-headedDutchman! Onethinghedidlikeabouthim,however.
