           MartinhadbeenwildtoseeRuth. Hiswasessentiallyalove-nature,andhepossessedmorethantheaverageman’sneedforsympathy. Hewasstarvingforsympathy,which,withhim,meantintelligentunderstanding; andhehadyettolearnthatRuth’ssympathywaslargelysentimentalandtactful,andthatitproceededfromgentlenessofnatureratherthanfromunderstandingoftheobjectsofhersympathy. SoitwaswhileMartinheldherhandandgladlytalked,thatherloveforhimpromptedhertopresshishandinreturn,andthathereyesweremoistandluminousatsightofhishelplessnessandofthemarkssufferinghadstampeduponhisface. 

           Butwhilehetoldherofhistwoacceptances,ofhisdespairwhenhereceivedtheonefromtheTranscontinental,andofthecorrespondingdelightwithwhichhereceivedtheonefromtheWhiteMouse,shedidnotfollowhim. Sheheardthewordsheutteredandunderstoodtheirliteralimport,butshewasnotwithhiminhisdespairandhisdelight. Shecouldnotgetoutofherself. Shewasnotinterestedinsellingstoriestomagazines. Whatwasimportanttoherwasmatrimony. Shewasnotawareofit,however,anymorethanshewasawarethatherdesirethatMartintakeapositionwastheinstinctiveandpreparativeimpulseofmotherhood. Shewouldhaveblushedhadshebeentoldasmuchinplain,setterms,andnext,shemighthavegrownindignantandassertedthathersoleinterestlayinthemanshelovedandherdesireforhimtomakethebestofhimself.
