Then,too,therewasthecounterimpulsetoshrinkawayfromhim. Shewasrepelledbythoselaceratedhands,grimedbytoilsothattheverydirtoflifewasingrainedinthefleshitself,bythatredchafeofthecollarandthosebulgingmuscles. Hisroughnessfrightenedher; eachroughnessofspeechwasaninsulttoherear,eachroughphaseofhislifeaninsulttohersoul. Andeverandagainwouldcomethedrawofhim,tillshethoughthemustbeeviltohavesuchpoweroverher. Allthatwasmostfirmlyestablishedinhermindwasrocking. Hisromanceandadventurewerebatteringattheconventions. Beforehisfacileperilsandreadylaugh,lifewasnolongeranaffairofseriouseffortandrestraint,butatoy,tobeplayedwithandturnedtopsy-turvy,carelesslytobelivedandpleasuredin,andcarelesslytobeflungaside. Thismanfromouterdarknesswasevil. Hermothersawit,andhermotherwasright. Shewouldtrusthermother’sjudgmentinthisasshehadalwaystrusteditinallthings. Thefireofhimwasnolongerwarm,andthefearofhimwasnolongerpoignant.
