           Mrs.Morsewasstrangelysadandhappy. Herchild-daughter,whowasabachelorofarts,wasgone;butinherplacewasawoman-daughter. Theexperimenthadsucceeded. ThestrangevoidinRuth’snaturehadbeenfilled,andfilledwithoutdangerorpenalty. Thisroughsailor-fellowhadbeentheinstrument,and,thoughRuthdidnotlovehim,hehadmadeherconsciousofherwomanhood.

           Itwasaholyhourformotheranddaughter,andtheireyeswerewetastheytalkedoninthetwilight,Ruthallwhiteinnocenceandfrankness,hermothersympathetic,receptive,yetcalmlyexplainingandguiding.
