Whenwereacheditwefoundwoodlaidout,thefirelightedandbeginningtokindleup,withothersignsofpreparationforourencampment;butPeterkinwasnowheretobefound.Wewonderedverymuchatthis;butJacksuggestedthathemighthavegonetofetchwater,sohegaveashouttolethimknowthatwehadarrived,andsatdownuponarock,whileIthrewoffmyjacketandseizedtheaxe,intendingtosplituponeortwobilletsofwood.ButIhadscarcemovedfromthespotwhen,inthedistance,weheardamostappallingshriek,whichwasfollowedupbyachorusofyellsfromthehogs,andaloudhurrah.
"Idobelieve,"saidI,"thatPeterkinhasmetwiththehogs."
"WhenGreekmeetsGreek,"saidJack,soliloquising,"thencomesthetugof—"
"Hurrah!"shoutedPeterkininthedistance.
Weturnedhastilytowardsthedirectionwhencethesoundcame,andsoondescriedPeterkinwalkingalongthebeachtowardsuswithalittlepigtransfixedontheendofhislongspear!
"Welldone,myboy!"exclaimedJack,slappinghimontheshoulderwhenhecameup."You’rethebestshotamongstus."
"Lookhere,Jack!"criedPeterkinashedisengagedtheanimalfromhisspear."Doyourecognisethathole?"saidhe,pointingtothepig’sear;"andareyoufamiliarwiththisarrow,eh?"
"Well,Ideclare!"saidJack.
"Ofcourseyoudo,"interruptedPeterkin;"but,pray,restrainyourdeclarationsatthistime,andlet’shavesupper—forI’muncommonlyhungry,Icantellyou.
