Whilewalkingalongthemarginweobservedfishinthewater,butofwhatsortwecouldnottell.
Now,aswenearedtheshore,JackandIsaidwewouldgoalittleoutofourwaytoseeifwecouldprocureoneofthoseducks;so,directingPeterkintogostraighttotheshoreandkindleafire,weseparated,promisingtorejoinhimspeedily.Butwedidnotfindtheducks,althoughwemadeadiligentsearchforhalf-an-hour.Wewereabouttoretraceourstepswhenwewerearrestedbyoneofthestrangestsightsthatwehadyetbeheld.
Justinfrontofus,atthedistanceofabouttenyards,grewasuperbtree,whichcertainlywasthelargestwehadyetseenontheisland.Itstrunkwasatleastfivefeetindiameter,withasmooth,greybark;abovethisthespreadingbrancheswereclothedwithlight-greenleaves,amidwhichwereclustersofbright-yellowfruit,sonumerousastoweighdowntheboughswiththeirgreatweight.Thisfruitseemedtobeoftheplumspecies,ofanoblongform,andagooddeallargerthanthemagnumbonumplum.Thegroundatthefootofthistreewasthicklystrewnwiththefallenfruit,inthemidstofwhichlaysleeping,ineverypossibleattitude,atleasttwentyhogsofallagesandsizes,apparentlyquitesurfeitedwitharecentbanquet.
JackandIcouldscarcerestrainourlaughteraswegazedatthesecoarse,fat,ill-lookinganimalswhiletheylaygroaningandsnoringheavilyamidtheremainsoftheirsupper.
