However,therewerequantitiesoffinenutsuponit,someofwhichweputinourpockets.Butitsstemwasthemostwonderfulpartofit.Itrosetoabouttwelvefeetwithoutabranch,andwasnotofgreatthickness;onthecontrary,itwasremarkablyslenderforthesizeofthetree.Buttomakeupforthis,therewerefourorfivewonderfulprojectionsinthisstem,whichIcannotbetterdescribethanbyaskingthereadertosupposethatfiveplanksoftwoinchesthickandthreefeetbroadhadbeenplacedroundthetrunkofthetree,withtheiredgescloselyfixedtoit,fromthegrounduptothebranches,andthattheseplankshadbeencoveredoverwiththebarkofthetreeandincorporatedwithit.Inshort,theywerejustnaturalbuttresses,withoutwhichthestemcouldnothavesupporteditsheavyandumbrageoustop.Wefoundthesechestnutstobeverynumerous.Theygrewchieflyonthebanksofthestream,andwereofallsizes.
WhilewewereexaminingasmalltreeofthiskindJackchippedapieceoffabuttresswithhisaxe,andfoundthewoodtobefirmandeasilycut.Hethenstrucktheaxeintoitwithallhisforce,andverysoonsplititoffclosetothetree—first,however,havingcutitacrosstransverselyaboveandbelow.Bythismeanshesatisfiedhimselfthatwecouldnowobtainshortplanks,asitwereallreadysawn,ofanysizeandthicknessthatwedesired,whichwasaverygreatdiscoveryindeed—perhapsthemostimportantwehadyetmade.
