Hereweretreesofeveryshapeandsizeandhuewhichitispossibletoconceiveof,manyofwhichwehadnotseenintheothervalleys;for,thestreaminthisvalleybeinglarger,andthemouldmuchricherthanintheValleyoftheWreck,itwasclothedwithamoreluxuriantgrowthoftreesandplants.Sometreesweredark,glossygreen;othersofarichandwarmhue,contrastingwellwiththoseofapale,lightgreen,whichwereeverywhereabundant.Amongthesewerecognisedthebroad,darkheadsofthebread-fruit,withitsgoldenfruit;thepure,silveryfoliageofthecandle-nut,andseveralspecieswhichboreastrongresemblancetothepine;whilehereandthere,ingroupsandinsingletrees,rosethetallformsofthecocoa-nutpalms,spreadingabroad,andwavingtheirgracefulplumeshighabovealltherest,asiftheywereasuperiorraceofstatelygiantskeepingguardovertheseluxuriantforests.Oh,itwasamostenchantingscene!andIthankedGodforhavingcreatedsuchdelightfulspotsfortheuseofman.
Now,whileweweregazingaroundusinsilentadmiration,Jackutteredanexclamationofsurprise,andpointingtoanobjectalittletoonesideofus,said:

"Andwhat’sabanyantree?"inquiredPeterkinaswewalkedtowardsit.
