Icametotheconclusionthatastateofprofoundpeaceandrepose,bothinregardtooutwardobjectsandwithinthesoul,isthehappiestconditioninwhichmancanbeplaced;foralthoughIhadmanyatimebeenmostjoyfulandhappywhenengagedinbustling,energetic,activepursuitsoramusements,IneverfoundthatsuchjoyorsatisfactionwassodeeporsopleasanttoreflectuponasthatwhichInowexperienced.AndIwasthemoreconfirmedinthisopinionwhenIobserved—and,indeed,astoldbyhimself—thatPeterkin’shappinesswasalsoverygreat;yethedidnotexpressthisbydancing,aswashiswont,nordidhegivesomuchasasingleshout,butwalkedquietlybetweenuswithhiseyesparklingandajoyfulsmileuponhiscountenance.MyreadermustnotsupposethatIthoughtallthisintheclearandmethodicalmannerinwhichIhavesetitdownhere.Thesethoughtsdidindeedpassthroughmymind;buttheydidsoinaveryconfusedandindefinitemanner,forIwasyoungatthattimeandnotmuchgiventodeepreflections.NeitherdidIconsiderthatthepeacewhereofIwriteisnottobefoundinthisworld—atleastinitsperfection—althoughIhavesincelearnedthat,byreligion,amanmayattaintoaverygreatdegreeofit.
IhavesaidthatPeterkinwalkedalongthesandsbetweenus.Wehadtwowaysofwalkingtogetheraboutourisland.Whenwetravelledthroughthewoodswealwaysdidsoinsinglefile,asbythismethodweadvancedwithgreaterfacility,theonetreadingintheother’sfootsteps.
