Itconsistedoftwomountains:theoneweguessedatfivehundredfeet;theother,onwhichwestood,atonethousand.Betweentheselayarich,beautifulvalley,asalreadysaid.Thisvalleycrossedtheislandfromoneendtotheother,beinghighinthemiddleandslopingoneachsidetowardsthesea.Thelargemountainsloped,onthesidefarthestfromwherewehadbeenwrecked,graduallytowardsthesea;butalthough,whenviewedataglance,ithadthusaregularslopingappearance,amorecarefulobservationshowedthatitwasbrokenupintoamultitudeofverysmallvales—or,rather,dellsandglens—intermingledwithlittleruggedspotsandsmallbutabruptprecipiceshereandthere,withrivuletstumblingovertheiredgesandwanderingdowntheslopesinlittlewhitestreams,sometimesglisteningamongthebroadleavesofthebread-fruitandcocoa-nuttrees,orhidingaltogetherbeneaththerichunderwood.Atthebaseofthismountainlayanarrowbright-greenplainormeadow,whichterminatedabruptlyattheshore.Ontheothersideoftheisland,whencewehadcome,stoodthesmallerhill,atthefootofwhichdivergedthreevalleys—onebeingthatwhichwehadascended,withasmallervaleoneachsideofit,andseparatedfromitbythetworidgesbeforementioned.
