           Iwasparticularlystruck,duringthewalk,withtherichnessoftheundergrowthinmostplaces,andrecognisedmanyberriesandplantsthatresembledthoseofmynativeland,especiallyatall,elegantlyformedfern,whichemittedanagreeableperfume.Therewereseveralkindsofflowers,too;butIdidnotseesomanyoftheseasIshouldhaveexpectedinsuchaclimate.Wealsosawagreatvarietyofsmallbirdsofbrightplumage,andmanyparoquetssimilartotheone,thatawokePeterkinsorudelyinthemorning.

           Thusweadvancedtothefootofthehillwithoutencounteringanythingtoalarmus,except,indeed,once,whenwewerepassingcloseunderapartofthehillwhichwashiddenfromourviewbythebroadleavesofthebanana-trees,whichgrewingreatluxurianceinthatpart.Jackwasjustpreparingtoforcehiswaythroughthisthicketwhenwewerestartledandarrestedbyastrangepatteringorrumblingsound,whichappearedtousquitedifferentfromanyofthesoundswehadheardduringthepreviouspartofourwalk.

           Againtherumblingsoundcame,louderthanbefore,andweallsprangbackandstoodonthedefensive.
