"Ohmydearyoungfriend,throughthegreatgoodnessofGodyouarefree!"
"Free?"criedJack.
"Ay,free!"repeatedtheteacher,shakinguswarmlybythehandsagainandagain—"freetogoandcomeasyouwill.TheLordhasunloosedthebondsofthecaptive,andsettheprisonersfree.Amissionaryhasbeensenttous,andTararohasembracedtheChristianreligion!Thepeopleareevennowburningtheirgodsofwood!Come,mydearfriends,andseetheglorioussight!"
Wecouldscarcelycreditoursenses.Solonghadwebeenaccustomed,inourcavern,todreamofdeliverance,thatweimaginedforamomentthismustsurelybenothingmorethananothervividdream.Oureyesandmindsweredazzled,too,bythebrilliantsunshine,whichalmostblindedusafterourlongconfinementtothegloomofourprison,sothatwefeltgiddywiththevarietyofconflictingemotionsthatfilledourthrobbingbosoms;butaswefollowedthefootstepsofoursablefriend,andbeheldthebrightfoliageofthetrees,andheardthecriesoftheparoquets,andsmelttherichperfumeofthefloweringshrubs,thetruth—thatwewerereallydeliveredfromprisonandfromdeath—rushedwithoverwhelmingpowerintooursouls,andwithoneaccord,whiletearssprangtooureyes,weutteredaloud,longcheerofjoy.
