JackandPeterkinraisedtheiroars,while,withafeelingofmadnesswhirlinginmybrain,Igraspedmypaddleandpreparedfortheonset.Butbeforeanyofuscouldstrikeablow,thesharpprowofthewar-canoestruckuslikeathunderboltonthesideandhurledusintothesea!
WhatoccurredafterthisIcannottell,forIwasnearlydrowned;butwhenIrecoveredfromthestateofinsensibilityintowhichIhadbeenthrown,Ifoundmyselfstretchedonmyback,boundhandandfoot,betweenJackandPeterkin,inthebottomofthelargecanoe.
Inthisconditionwelaythewholeday,duringwhichtimethesavagesonlyrestedonehour.Whennightcametheyrestedagainforanotherhour,andappearedtosleepjustastheysat.Butwewereneitherunboundnorallowedtospeaktoeachotherduringthevoyage,norwasamorseloffoodoradraughtofwatergiventous.Forfood,however,wecaredlittle;butwewouldhavegivenmuchforadropofwatertocoolourparchedlips.Andwewouldhavebeenglad,too,hadtheyloosenedthecordsthatboundus;fortheyweretightlyfastened,andoccasionedusmuchpain.Theair,also,wasunusuallyhot—somuchsothatIfeltconvincedthatastormwasbrewing.Thisalsoaddedtooursufferings.However,thesewereatlengthrelievedbyourarrivalattheislandfromwhichwehadfled.
Whilewewerebeingledashore,wecaughtaglimpseofAvatea,whowasseatedinthehinderpartofthecanoe.Shewasnotfetteredinanyway.
