AsIhavebeforestated,thewaterwithinthereefwasascalmasapond;andastherewasnowind,itwasquiteclearfromthesurfacetothebottom,sothatwecouldseedowneasilyevenatadepthoftwentyorthirtyyards.WhenJackandIdivedintoshallowerwaterweexpectedtohavefoundsandandstones,insteadofwhichwefoundourselvesinwhatappearedreallytobeanenchantedgarden.Thewholeofthebottomofthelagoon,aswecalledthecalmwaterwithinthereef,wascoveredwithcoralofeveryshape,size,andhue.Someportionswereformedlikelargemushrooms;othersappearedlikethebrainofaman,havingstalksornecksattachedtothem;butthemostcommonkindwasaspeciesofbranchingcoral,andsomeportionswereofalovelypale-pinkcolour,otherswerepurewhite.Amongthistheregrewlargequantitiesofseaweedoftherichesthuesimaginable,andofthemostgracefulforms;whileinnumerablefishes—blue,red,yellow,green,andstriped—sportedinandoutamongsttheflower-bedsofthissubmarinegarden,anddidnotappeartobeatallafraidofourapproachingthem.
Ondartingtothesurfaceforbreathafterourfirstdive,JackandIroseclosetoeachother.
"Didyoueverinyourlife,Ralph,seeanythingsolovely?"saidJackasheflungthesprayfromhishair.
"Never,"Ireplied."Itappearstomelikefairyrealms.Icanscarcelybelievethatwearenotdreaming."
