Drawingasideintothebushes,weawaitedtheircomingup;andastheydrewnear,weobservedthatitwasaprocessionofthenatives,manyofwhomweredancingandgesticulatinginthemostfranticmanner.Theyhadanexceedinglyhideousaspect,owingtotheblack,red,andyellowpaintswithwhichtheirfacesandnakedbodieswerebedaubed.Inthemidstofthesecameabandofmencarryingthreeorfourplanks,onwhichwereseated,inrows,upwardsofadozenmen.IshudderedinvoluntarilyasIrecollectedthesacrificeofhumanvictimsattheislandofEmo,andturnedwithalookoffeartoJackasIsaid:
"OhJack!Ihaveaterribledreadthattheyaregoingtocommitsomeoftheircruelpracticesonthesewretchedmen.Wehadbetternotgotothetemple.Weshallonlybehorrifiedwithoutbeingabletodoanygood,forIfeartheyaregoingtokillthem."
Jack’sfaceworeanexpressionofdeepcompassionashesaidinalowvoice,"Nofear,Ralph;thesufferingsofthesepoorfellowsareoverlongago."
Iturnedwithastartashespoke,andglancingatthemen,whowerenowquiteneartothespotwherewestood,sawthattheywerealldead.Theyweretiedfirmlywithropesinasittingpostureontheplanks,andseemed,astheybenttheirsightlesseyeballsandgrinningmouthsoverthedancingcrewbelow,asiftheywerelaughinginghastlymockeryattheutterinabilityoftheirenemiestohurtthemnow.
