Whilethusmeditating,InaturallybethoughtmeofmyBible,forIhadfaithfullykeptthepromisewhichIgaveatpartingtomybelovedmother—thatIwouldreaditeverymorning;anditwaswithafeelingofdismaythatIrememberedIhadleftitintheship.Iwasmuchtroubledaboutthis.However,IconsoledmyselfwithreflectingthatIcouldkeepthesecondpartofmypromisetoher—namely,thatIshouldneveromittosaymyprayers.SoIrosequietlylestIshoulddisturbmycompanions,whowerestillasleep,andsteppedasideintothebushesforthispurpose.
OnmyreturnIfoundthemstillslumbering,soIagainlaydowntothinkoveroursituation.JustatthatmomentIwasattractedbythesightofaverysmallparrot,whichJackafterwardstoldmewascalledaparoquet.ItwasseatedonatwigthatoverhungPeterkin’shead,andIwasspeedilylostinadmirationofitsbright-greenplumage,whichwasmingledwithothergaycolours.WhileIlookedIobservedthatthebirdturneditsheadslowlyfromsidetosideandlookeddownwards,firstwiththeoneeyeandthenwiththeother.OnglancingdownwardsIobservedthatPeterkin’smouthwaswideopen,andthatthisremarkablebirdwaslookingintoit.PeterkinusedtosaythatIhadnotanatomoffuninmycomposition,andthatInevercouldunderstandajoke.Inregardtothelatter,perhapshewasright;yetIthinkthat,whentheywereexplainedtome,Iunderstoodjokesaswellasmostpeople.
