BythismeansIwasenabled,also,togoaboutthedeckanddownbelowforthingsthatIwantedasoccasionrequired;alsotocookandeatmyvictuals.ButIdidnotdaretotrusttothisplanduringthethreehoursofrestthatIallowedmyselfatnight,asthewindmighthaveshifted,inwhichcaseIshouldhavebeenblownfaroutofmycourseereIawoke.Iwas,therefore,inthehabitofheaving-toduringthosethreehours—thatis,fixingtherudderandthesailsinsuchapositionasthat,byactingagainsteachother,theywouldkeeptheshipstationary.Aftermynight’srest,therefore,Ihadonlytomakeallowancefortheleewayshehadmade,andsoresumemycourse.
OfcourseIwas,tosomeextent,anxiouslestanothersquallshouldcome;butImadethebestprovisionIcouldinthecircumstances,andconcludedthatbylettinggotheweather-bracesofthetopsailsandthetopsailhalyardsatthesametime,Ishouldtherebyrenderthesesailsalmostpowerless.Besidesthis,Iproposedtomyselftokeepasharplookoutonthebarometerinthecabin;andifIobservedatanytimeasuddenfallinit,IresolvedthatIwouldinstantlysetaboutmymultiformappliancesforreducingsail,soastoavoidbeingtakenunawares.ThusIsailedprosperouslyfortwoweeks,withafairwind,sothatIcalculatedImustbedrawingneartotheCoralIsland,atthethoughtofwhichmyheartboundedwithjoyfulexpectation.
TheonlybookIfoundonboard,afteracarefulsearch,wasavolumeofCaptainCook’svoyages.
