           Heslippedoverthesidewithamusketinhislefthand,whilewithhisrightheswamashoreandenteredthewoods.Hesoonreturned,havingaccomplishedhispurpose,andgotonboardwithoutbeingseen,Ibeingtheonlyoneondeck.

           Whenthehourofmidnightapproached,themenweremusteredondeck,thecablewascut,andthemuffledsweepsgotout.Thesesweepswereimmenselylargeoars,eachrequiringacoupleofmentoworkit.Inafewminutesweenteredthemouthofthecreek,whichwasindeedthemouthofasmallriver,andtookabouthalf-an-hourtoascendit,althoughthespotwhereweintendedtolandwasnotmorethansixhundredyardsfromthemouth,becausetherewasaslightcurrentagainstus,andthemangroveswhichnarrowedthecreekimpededtherowersinsomeplaces.Havingreachedthespot,whichwassodarkenedbyoverhangingtreesthatwecouldseewithdifficulty,asmallkedge-anchorattachedtoathinlinewasletsoftlydownoverthestern.

           "Now,lads,"whisperedthecaptainashewalkedalongthelineofmen,whowereallarmedtotheteeth,"don’tbeinahurry,aimlow,anddon’twasteyourfirstshots."
