Iafterwardslearnedthatthisprocessoftattooingisverypainful,andtakeslongtodo,commencingattheageoften,andbeingcontinuedatintervalsuptotheageofthirty.Itisdonebymeansofaninstrumentmadeofbone,withanumberofsharpteeth,withwhichtheskinispunctured.Intothesepuncturesapreparationmadefromthekernelofthecandle-nut,mixedwithcocoa-nutoil,isrubbed,andthemarkthusmadeisindelible.Theoperationisperformedbyaclassofmenwhoseprofessionitis,andtheytattooasmuchatatimeasthepersononwhomtheyareoperatingcanbear,whichisnotmuch,thepainandinflammationcausedbytattooingbeingverygreat—sometimescausingdeath.Someofthechiefsweretattooedwithanornamentalstripedownthelegs,whichgavethemtheappearanceofbeingcladintights;othershadmarksroundtheanklesandinsteps,whichlookedliketight-fittingandelegantboots.Theirfaceswerealsotattooed,andtheirbreastswereveryprofuselymarkedwitheveryimaginablespeciesofdevice—muskets,dogs,birds,pigs,clubs,andcanoes,intermingledwithlozenges,squares,circles,andotherarbitraryfigures.
Thewomenwerenottattooedsomuchasthemen,havingonlyafewmarksontheirfeetandarms.ButImustsay,howeverobjectionablethisstrangepracticemaybe,itneverthelesshadthisgoodeffect—thatittookawayverymuchfromtheirappearanceofnakedness.
