Beforeourguestsleftus,thecaptainorderedthebrassguntobeuncoveredandfiredfortheirgratification;andIhaveeveryreasontobelievehedidsoforthepurposeofshowingoursuperiorpower,incasethenativesshouldharbouranyevildesignsagainstus.Romatahadneverseenthisgunbefore,asithadnotbeenuncoveredonpreviousvisits,andtheastonishmentwithwhichhevieweditwasveryamusing.Beingdesirousofknowingitspower,hebeggedthatthecaptainwouldfireit;soashotwasputintoit.Thechiefswerethendirectedtolookatarockabouttwomilesoutatsea,andthegunwasfired.Inasecondthetopoftherockwasseentoburstasunder,andtofallinfragmentsintothesea.
