Iwasmuchinterestedinthis,andrecollectedthatJackhadoftenspokenofmanyoftheislandsofthePacificasbeingvolcanoes,eitheractiveorextinct,andhadsaidthatthewholeregionwasmoreorlessvolcanic,andthatsomescientificmenwereofopinionthattheislandsofthePacificwerenothingmoreorlessthanthemountain-topsofahugecontinentwhichhadsunkundertheinfluenceofvolcanicagency.
Threedaysafterpassingthevolcano,wefoundourselvesafewmilestowindwardofanislandofconsiderablesizeandluxuriantaspect.Itconsistedoftwomountains,whichseemedtobenearlyfourthousandfeethigh.Theywereseparatedfromeachotherbyabroadvalley,whosethick-growingtreesascendedaconsiderabledistanceupthemountain-sides;andrich,levelplainsormeadow-landspreadroundthebaseofthemountains,exceptatthepointimmediatelyoppositethelargevalley,whereariverseemedtocarrythetrees,asitwere,alongwithitdowntothewhite,sandyshore.Themountain-tops,unlikethoseofourCoralIsland,weresharp,needle-shaped,andbare,whiletheirsidesweremoreruggedandgrandinoutlinethananythingIhadyetseeninthoseseas.BloodyBillwasbesidemewhentheislandfirsthoveinsight.
