Thismanwasofamorose,sulkydisposition,andduringallthetimeheremainedontheisland,regardedus—especiallyJack—withascowlingvisage.Hisname,wefound,wasMahine.
Thenextthreeorfourdayswerespentbythesavagesinmendingtheircanoe,whichhadbeendamagedbytheviolentshockithadsustainedonstrikingtheshore.Thiscanoewasaverycuriousstructure.Itwasaboutthirtyfeetlong,andhadahigh,toweringstern.Thetimbersofwhichitwaspartlycomposedwerefastenedmuchinthesamewayasthoseofourlittleboatwereputtogether;butthepartthatseemedmostcurioustouswasasortofoutrigger,orlongplank,whichwasattachedtothebodyofthecanoebymeansoftwostoutcross-beams.Thesebeamskepttheplankparallelwiththecanoe,butnotincontactwithit,foritfloatedinthewaterwithanopenspacebetween—thusformingasortofdoublecanoe.This,wefound,wasintendedtopreventtheupsettingofthecanoe,whichwassonarrowthatitcouldnothavemaintainedanuprightpositionwithouttheoutrigger.Wecouldnothelpwonderingbothattheingenuityandtheclumsinessofthiscontrivance.
Whenthecanoewasready,weassistedthenativestocarrytheprisonersintoit,andhelpedthemtoloaditwithprovisionsandfruit.Peterkinalsowenttotheplum-treeforthepurposeofmakingaspecialonslaughtuponthehogs,andkillednolessthansixofthem.Thesewebakedandpresentedtoourfriends,onthedayoftheirdeparture.
