Thenightgrewpitchydarkasitadvanced,sothatwecouldnotseeourhandswhenweheldthemupbeforeoureyes,andwereobligedtofeeleachotheroccasionallytomakesurethatweweresafe,forthestormatlastbecamesoterriblethatitwasdifficulttomakeourvoicesaudible.Aslightvariationofthewind,aswesupposed,causedafewdropsofsprayeverandanontoblowintoourfaces;andtheeddyofthesea,initsmadboiling,washedupintoourlittlecreekuntilitreachedourfeetandthreatenedtotearawayourboat.Inordertopreventthislattercalamity,wehauledtheboatfartherupandheldthecableinourhands.Occasionalflashesoflightningshonewithaghastlyglarethroughthewaterycurtainsaroundus,andlentadditionalhorrortothescene.Yetwelongedforthosedismalflashes,fortheywerelessappallingthanthethickblacknessthatsucceededthem.Crashingpealsofthunderseemedtoteartheskiesintwain,andfelluponourearsthroughthewildyellingofthehurricaneasifithadbeenbutagentlesummerbreeze;whilethebillowsburstupontheweathersideoftheislanduntilwefanciedthatthesolidrockwasgivingway,andinouragonyweclungtothebareground,expectingeverymomenttobewhirledawayandwhelmedintheblack,howlingsea.Oh,itwasanightofterribleanxiety!andnoonecanconceivethefeelingsofintensegratitudeandreliefwithwhichweatlastsawthedawnofdaybreakthroughthevapourymistsaroundus.
