Atlastshewentgentlybehindtheyoungbirdandpusheditalittletowardsthewater,butwithgreattenderness,asmuchastosay,"Don’tbeafraid,darling;Iwon’thurtyou,mypet!"Butnosoonerdidshegetittotheedgeoftherock,whereitstoodlookingpensivelydownatthesea,thanshegaveitasuddenandviolentpush,sendingitheadlongdowntheslopeintothewater,whereitsmotherleftittoscrambleashoreasitbestcould.Weobservedmanyofthememployedindoingthis,andwecametotheconclusionthatthisisthewayinwhicholdpenguinsteachtheirchildrentoswim.
Scarcelyhadwefinishedmakingourremarksonthis,whenwewerestartledbyaboutadozenoftheoldbirdshoppinginthemostclumsyandludicrousmannertowardsthesea.Thebeachherewasaslopingrock,andwhentheycametoitsomeofthemsucceededinhoppingdowninsafety,butotherslosttheirbalanceandrolledandscrambleddowntheslopeinthemosthelplessmanner.Theinstanttheyreachedthewater,however,theyseemedtobeintheirproperelement.Theydived,andboundedoutofitandintoitagainwiththeutmostagility;andso,divingandboundingandsputtering—fortheycouldnotfly—theywentrapidlyouttosea.
Onseeingthis,Peterkinturnedwithagravefacetousandsaid,"It’smyopinionthatthesebirdsareallstark,staringmad,andthatthisisanenchantedisland.Ithereforeproposethatweshouldeitherputaboutshipandflyinterrorfromthespot,orlandvalorouslyontheislandandsellourlivesasdearlyaswecan."
