Itburstcompletelyoverthereefatallpointswitharoarthatseemedloudertomethanthunder,andthisroarcontinuedforsomesecondswhilethewaverolledgraduallyalongtowardsthecliffonwhichwestood.Asitscrestrearedbeforeuswefeltthatwewereingreatdanger,andturnedtoflee;butweweretoolate.Withacrashthatseemedtoshakethesolidrock,thegiganticbillowfell,andinstantlythespouting-holessentupagushofwaterspoutswithsuchforcethattheyshriekedonissuingfromtheirnarrowvents.Itseemedtousasiftheearthhadbeenblownupwithwater.Wewerestunnedandconfusedbytheshock,andsodrenchedandblindedwithspraythatweknewnotforafewmomentswhithertofleeforshelter.Atlengthweallthreegainedaneminencebeyondthereachofthewater.Butwhatasceneofdevastationmetourgazeaswelookedalongtheshore!Thisenormouswavenotonlyburstoverthereef,butcontinueditswayacrossthelagoon,andfellonthesandybeachoftheislandwithsuchforcethatitpassedcompletelyoveritanddashedintothewoods,levellingthesmallertreesandbushesinitsheadlongcourse.
Onseeingthis,Jacksaidhefearedourbowermusthavebeensweptaway,andthattheboat,whichwasonthebeach,musthavebeenutterlydestroyed.Ourheartssankwithinusaswethoughtofthis,andwehastenedroundthroughthewoodstowardsourhome.
