—Jackhadalsoovercomethedifficultyaboutthekeelbypinningtoitafalsekeel.Thiswasapieceoftoughwood,ofthesamelengthandwidthastherealkeel,andaboutfiveinchesdeep.Hemadeitofthisdepthbecausetheboatwouldbetherebyrenderednotonlymuchmoresafe,butmoreabletobeatagainstthewind—which,inaseawherethetrade-windsblowsolongandsosteadilyinonedirection,wasamatterofgreatimportance.Thispieceofwoodwaspeggedveryfirmlytothekeel;andwenowlaunchedourboatwiththesatisfactionofknowingthatwhenthefalsekeelshouldbescrapedoffwecouldeasilyputonanother—whereas,shouldtherealkeelhavebeenscrapedaway,wecouldnothavereneweditwithouttakingourboattopieces,whichPeterkinsaidmadehis"marrowquaketothinkupon."
Themastandsailansweredexcellently;andwenowsailedaboutinthelagoonwithgreatdelight,andexaminedwithmuchinteresttheappearanceofourislandfromadistance.Also,wegazedintothedepthsofthewater,andwatchedforhoursthegambolsofthecuriousandbright-colouredfishamongthecoralsandseaweed.Peterkinalsomadeafishing-line;andJackconstructedanumberofhooks,someofwhichwereverygood,othersremarkablybad.Someofthesehooksweremadeofiron-wood—whichdidprettywell,thewoodbeingextremelyhard—andJackmadethemverythickandlarge.Fishtherearenotparticular.Someofthecrookedbonesinfish-headsalsoansweredforthispurposeprettywell.
