Jackwentintothewoodsandblockedthemroughlyoutwiththeaxe,andIsmoothedthemdownwiththeknife,whilePeterkinremainedinthebowerspinning,orrathertwisting,somestrong,thickcordagewithwhichtofastenthemtotheboat.
Weworkedhardandrapidly,sothatwhenthesunwentdownJackandIreturnedtothebowerwithfourstoutoars,whichrequiredlittletobedonetothemsaveaslightdegreeofpolishingwiththeknife.Aswedrewnearweweresuddenlyarrestedbythesoundofavoice.Wewerenotalittlesurprisedatthis—indeed,Imayalmostsayalarmed;foralthoughPeterkinwasundoubtedlyfondoftalking,wehadnever,uptothistime,foundhimtalkingtohimself.Welistenedintently,andstillheardthesoundofavoiceasifinconversation.Jackmotionedmetobesilent,andadvancingtothebowerontiptoe,wepeepedin.
Thesightthatmetourgazewascertainlynotalittleamusing.Onthetopofalogwhichwesometimesusedasatablesattheblackcatwithaverydemureexpressiononitscountenance,andinfrontofit,sittingonthegroundwithhislegsextendedoneithersideofthelog,wasPeterkin.Atthemomentwesawhimhewasgazingintentlyintothecat’sface,withhisnoseaboutfourinchesfromit,hishandsbeingthrustintohisbreechespockets.
"Cat,"saidPeterkin,turninghisheadalittleononeside,"Iloveyou!"
Therewasapause,asifPeterkinawaitedareplytothisaffectionatedeclaration.Butthecatsaidnothing.
"Doyouhearme?"criedPeterkinsharply.
