JackandIweresurprisedthatwehadnotnoticedthisthefirstfewdaysofourresidencehere,andcouldonlyaccountforitbyourbeingsomuchtakenupwiththemoreobviouswondersofournovelsituation.Ihavesincelearned,however,thatthiswantofobservationisasadandverycommoninfirmityofhumannature,therebeinghundredsofpersonsbeforewhoseeyesthemostwonderfulthingsarepassingeverydaywhonevertheless,aretotallyignorantofthem.Ithereforehavetorecordmysympathywithsuchpersons,andtorecommendtothemacourseofconductwhichIhavenowforalongtimemyselfadopted—namely,thehabitofforcingmyattentionuponallthingsthatgoonaroundme,andoftakingsomedegreeofinterestinthemwhetherIfeelitnaturallyornot.Isuggestthisthemoreearnestly,thoughhumbly,becauseIhaveveryfrequentlycometoknowthatmyindifferencetoathinghasgenerallybeencausedbymyignoranceinregardtoit.
