Althoughweproceededfarintothiscavern,wedidnotcometotheendofit;andwewereobligedtoreturnmorespeedilythanwewouldotherwisehavedone,asourtorchwasnearlyexpended.Wedidnotobserveanyopeningsintheroof,oranyindicationsofplaceswherebylightmightenter;butneartheentrancetothecavernstoodanimmensemassofpure-whitecoralrock,whichcaughtandthrewbackthelittlelightthatfoundanentrancethroughthecave’smouth,andthusproduced,weconjectured,thepale-greenobjectwhichhadfirstattractedourattention.Weconcluded,also,thatthereflectingpowerofthisrockwasthatwhichgaveforththedimlightthatfaintlyilluminedthefirstpartofthecave.
Beforedivingthroughthepassageagainweextinguishedthesmallpieceofourtorchthatremained,andleftitinadryspot—conceivingthatwemightpossiblystandinneedofitif,atanyfuturetime,weshouldchancetowetourtorchwhiledivingintothecavern.Aswestoodforafewminutesafteritwasout,waitingtilloureyesbecameaccustomedtothegloom,wecouldnothelpremarkingthedeep,intensestillnessandtheunutterablegloomofallaroundus;andasIthoughtofthestupendousdomeabove,andthecountlessgemsthathadsparkledinthetorchlightafewminutesbefore,itcameintomymindtoconsiderhowstrangeitisthatGodshouldmakesuchwonderfulandexquisitelybeautifulworksnevertobeseenatall—except,indeed,bychancevisitorssuchasourselves
