Therewasnofurnitureintheapartmentsavealittlewoodenstoolandanironpot,thelatteralmosteatenthroughwithrust.Inthecornerfarthestfromthedoorwasalowbedstead,onwhichlaytwoskeletons,embeddedinalittleheapofdrydust.Withbeatingheartswewentforwardtoexaminethem.Onewastheskeletonofaman;theotherthatofadog,whichwasextendedclosebesidethatoftheman,withitsheadrestingonhisbosom.
Nowwewereverymuchconcernedaboutthisdiscovery,andcouldscarcerefrainfromtearsonbeholdingthesesadremains.Aftersometimewebegantotalkaboutwhatwehadseen,andtoexamineinandaroundthehut,inordertodiscoversomecluetothenameorhistoryofthispoorman,whohadthusdiedinsolitude,withnonetomournhislosssavehiscatandhisfaithfuldog.Butwefoundnothing—neitherabooknorascrapofpaper.Wefound,however,thedecayedremnantsofwhatappearedtohavebeenclothing,andanoldaxe.Butnoneofthesethingsboremarksofanykind,andindeedtheyweresomuchdecayedastoconvinceusthattheyhadlainintheconditioninwhichwefoundthemformanyyears.
Thisdiscoverynowaccountedtousforthetree-stumpatthetopofthemountainwiththeinitialscutonit;alsoforthepatchofsugar-caneandothertracesofmanwhichwehadmetwithinthecourseofourramblesovertheisland.
