           Atlastwecametothedoorofaroom,andshesaid,"Goin."

           Ianswered,moreinshynessthanpoliteness,"Afteryou,miss."

           Tothisshereturned:"Don’tberidiculous,boy;Iamnotgoingin."Andscornfullywalkedaway,andwhatwasworsetookthecandlewithher.

           Thiswasveryuncomfortable,andIwashalfafraid.However,theonlythingtobedonebeingtoknockatthedoor,Iknocked,andwastoldfromwithintoenter.Ientered,therefore,andfoundmyselfinaprettylargeroom,welllightedwithwaxcandles.Noglimpseofdaylightwastobeseeninit.Itwasadressing-room,asIsupposedfromthefurniture,thoughmuchofitwasofformsandusesthenquiteunknowntome.Butprominentinitwasadrapedtablewithagildedlooking-glass,andthatImadeoutatfirstsighttobeafinelady’sdressing-table.

           WhetherIshouldhavemadeoutthisobjectsosooniftherehadbeennofineladysittingatit,Icannotsay.Inanarm-chair,withanelbowrestingonthetableandherheadleaningonthathand,satthestrangestladyIhaveeverseen,orshalleversee.

           Shewasdressedinrichmaterialssatins,andlace,andsilksallofwhite.Hershoeswerewhite.Andshehadalongwhiteveildependentfromherhair,andshehadbridalflowersinherhair,butherhairwaswhite.Somebrightjewelssparkledonherneckandonherhands,andsomeotherjewelslaysparklingonthetable.
