           Shehadbeeninoneofherbadstatesthoughtheyhadgotbetteroflate,ratherthanworseforfourdays,whenshecameoutofitintheevening,justattea-time,andsaidquiteplainly,‘Joe.’Asshehadneversaidanywordforalongwhile,IranandfetchedinMr.Gargeryfromtheforge.Shemadesignstomethatshewantedhimtositdownclosetoher,andwantedmetoputherarmsroundhisneck.SoIputthemroundhisneck,andshelaidherheaddownonhisshoulderquitecontentandsatisfied.Andsoshepresentlysaid‘Joe’again,andonce‘Pardon,’andonce‘Pip.’Andsosheneverliftedherheadupanymore,anditwasjustanhourlaterwhenwelaiditdownonherownbed,becausewefoundshewasgone."

           Biddycried;thedarkeninggarden,andthelane,andthestarsthatwerecomingout,wereblurredinmyownsight.

           "Nothingwaseverdiscovered,Biddy?"

           "Nothing."

           "DoyouknowwhatisbecomeofOrlick?"

           "Ishouldthinkfromthecolorofhisclothesthatheisworkinginthequarries."
