           Helookedacrossatme,andhiseyeappraisedmywatch-chain,andthenheincidentallyspatandsaidsomethingtotheotherconvict,andtheylaughedandsluedthemselvesroundwithaclinkoftheircouplingmanacle,andlookedatsomethingelse.Thegreatnumbersontheirbacks,asiftheywerestreetdoors;theircoarsemangyungainlyoutersurface,asiftheywereloweranimals;theirironedlegs,apologeticallygarlandedwithpocket-handkerchiefs;andthewayinwhichallpresentlookedatthemandkeptfromthem;madethem(asHerberthadsaid)amostdisagreeableanddegradedspectacle.

           Butthiswasnottheworstofit.ItcameoutthatthewholeofthebackofthecoachhadbeentakenbyafamilyremovingfromLondon,andthattherewerenoplacesforthetwoprisonersbutontheseatinfrontbehindthecoachman.Hereupon,acholericgentleman,whohadtakenthefourthplaceonthatseat,flewintoamostviolentpassion,andsaidthatitwasabreachofcontracttomixhimupwithsuchvillainouscompany,andthatitwaspoisonous,andpernicious,andinfamous,andshameful,andIdon’tknowwhatelse.Atthistimethecoachwasreadyandthecoachmanimpatient,andwewereallpreparingtogetup,andtheprisonershadcomeoverwiththeirkeeperbringingwiththemthatcuriousflavorofbread-poultice,baize,rope-yarn,andhearthstone,whichattendstheconvictpresence.
