           Mysister,havingsomuchtodo,wasgoingtochurchvicariously,thatistosay,JoeandIweregoing.Inhisworkingclothes,Joewasawell-knitcharacteristic-lookingblacksmith;inhisholidayclothes,hewasmorelikeascarecrowingoodcircumstances,thananythingelse.Nothingthatheworethenfittedhimorseemedtobelongtohim;andeverythingthatheworethengrazedhim.Onthepresentfestiveoccasionheemergedfromhisroom,whentheblithebellsweregoing,thepictureofmisery,inafullsuitofSundaypenitentials.Astome,IthinkmysistermusthavehadsomegeneralideathatIwasayoungoffenderwhomanAccoucheurPolicemanhadtakenup(onmybirthday)anddeliveredovertoher,tobedealtwithaccordingtotheoutragedmajestyofthelaw.IwasalwaystreatedasifIhadinsistedonbeingborninoppositiontothedictatesofreason,religion,andmorality,andagainstthedissuadingargumentsofmybestfriends.EvenwhenIwastakentohaveanewsuitofclothes,thetailorhadorderstomakethemlikeakindofReformatory,andonnoaccounttoletmehavethefreeuseofmylimbs.
