Itwasasmoothwayofgoingon,perhaps,inrespectofsavingtrouble;butithadtheappearanceofbeingexpensive,fortheservantsfeltitadutytheyowedtothemselvestobeniceintheireatinganddrinking,andtokeepadealofcompanydownstairs.TheyallowedaveryliberaltabletoMr.andMrs.Pocket,yetitalwaysappearedtomethatbyfarthebestpartofthehousetohaveboardedinwouldhavebeenthekitchen—alwayssupposingtheboardercapableofself-defence,for,beforeIhadbeenthereaweek,aneighboringladywithwhomthefamilywerepersonallyunacquainted,wroteintosaythatshehadseenMillersslappingthebaby.ThisgreatlydistressedMrs.Pocket,whoburstintotearsonreceivingthenote,andsaidthatitwasanextraordinarythingthattheneighborscouldn’tmindtheirownbusiness.
