Itopenedtotheground,andlookedintoamostmiserablecorneroftheneglectedgarden,uponarankruinofcabbage-stalks,andonebox-treethathadbeenclippedroundlongago,likeapudding,andhadanewgrowthatthetopofit,outofshapeandofadifferentcolor,asifthatpartofthepuddinghadstucktothesaucepanandgotburnt.Thiswasmyhomelythought,asIcontemplatedthebox-tree.Therehadbeensomelightsnow,overnight,anditlaynowhereelsetomyknowledge;but,ithadnotquitemeltedfromthecoldshadowofthisbitofgarden,andthewindcaughtitupinlittleeddiesandthrewitatthewindow,asifitpeltedmeforcomingthere.
Idivinedthatmycominghadstoppedconversationintheroom,andthatitsotheroccupantswerelookingatme.Icouldseenothingoftheroomexcepttheshiningofthefireinthewindow-glass,butIstiffenedinallmyjointswiththeconsciousnessthatIwasundercloseinspection.
Therewerethreeladiesintheroomandonegentleman.BeforeIhadbeenstandingatthewindowfiveminutes,theysomehowconveyedtomethattheywerealltoadiesandhumbugs,butthateachofthempretendednottoknowthattheothersweretoadiesandhumbugs:becausetheadmissionthatheorshedidknowit,wouldhavemadehimorherouttobeatoadyandhumbug.
Theyallhadalistlessanddrearyairofwaitingsomebody’spleasure,andthemosttalkativeoftheladieshadtospeakquiterigidlytorepressayawn.
