           Theirgentleinfluencemayteachushowtoweavefreshgarlandsforthegravesofthoseweloved:maypurifyourthoughts,andbeardownbeforeitoldenmityandhatred;butbeneathallthis,therelingers,intheleastreflectivemind,avagueandhalf-formedconsciousnessofhavingheldsuchfeelingslongbefore,insomeremoteanddistanttime,whichcallsupsolemnthoughtsofdistanttimestocome,andbendsdownprideandworldlinessbeneathit.

           Itwasalovelyspottowhichtheyrepaired.Oliver,whosedayshadbeenspentamongsqualidcrowds,andinthemidstofnoiseandbrawling,seemedtoenteronanewexistencethere.Theroseandhoneysuckleclungtothecottagewalls;theivycreptroundthetrunksofthetrees;andthegarden-flowersperfumedtheairwithdeliciousodours.Hardby,wasalittlechurchyard;notcrowdedwithtallunsightlygravestones,butfullofhumblemounds,coveredwithfreshturfandmoss:beneathwhich,theoldpeopleofthevillagelayatrest.Oliveroftenwanderedhere;and,thinkingofthewretchedgraveinwhichhismotherlay,wouldsometimessithimdownandsobunseen;but,whenheraisedhiseyestothedeepskyoverhead,hewouldceasetothinkofheraslyingintheground,andwouldweepforher,sadly,butwithoutpain.

           Itwasahappytime.Thedayswerepeacefulandserene;thenightsbroughtwiththemneitherfearnorcare;nolanguishinginawretchedprison,orassociatingwithwretchedmen;nothingbutpleasantandhappythoughts.
