           Thenightwasverydark.Adampmistrosefromtheriver,andthemarshygroundabout;andspreaditselfoverthedrearyfields.Itwaspiercingcold,too;allwasgloomyandblack.Notawordwasspoken;forthedriverhadgrownsleepy;andSikeswasinnomoodtoleadhimintoconversation.Oliversathuddledtogether,inacornerofthecart;bewilderedwithalarmandapprehension;andfiguringstrangeobjectsinthegaunttrees,whosebrancheswavedgrimlytoandfro,asifinsomefantasticjoyatthedesolationofthescene.
