           ‘AndI’mafraid,yousee,addedtheJew,speakingasifhehadnotnoticedtheinterruption;andregardingtheothercloselyashedidso‘I’mafraidthat,ifthegamewasupwithus,itmightbeupwithagoodmanymore,andthatitwouldcomeoutratherworseforyouthanitwouldforme,mydear.

           Themanstarted,andturnedroundupontheJew.Buttheoldgentleman’sshoulderswereshruggeduptohisears;andhiseyeswerevacantlystaringontheoppositewall.

           Therewasalongpause.Everymemberoftherespectablecoterieappearedplungedinhisownreflections;notexceptingthedog,whobyacertainmaliciouslickingofhislipsseemedtobemeditatinganattackuponthelegsofthefirstgentlemanorladyhemightencounterinthestreetswhenhewentout.

           ‘Somebodymustfindoutwot’sbeendoneattheoffice,’saidMr.Sikesinamuchlowertonethanhehadtakensincehecamein.

           TheJewnoddedassent.

           AgaintheJewnodded.
