Whend’Artagnanarrivedinsightofthebarespotofgroundwhichextendedalongthefootofthemonastery,Athoshadbeenwaitingaboutfiveminutes,andtwelveo’clockwasstriking.Hewas,then,aspunctualastheSamaritanwoman,andthemostrigorouscasuistwithregardtoduelscouldhavenothingtosay.
Athos,whostillsufferedgrievouslyfromhiswound,thoughithadbeendressedanewbyM.deTreville’ssurgeon,wasseatedonapostandwaitingforhisadversarywithhatinhand,hisfeathereventouchingtheground.
