           D’ArtagnanwasacquaintedwithnobodyinParis.HewentthereforetohisappointmentwithAthoswithoutasecond,determinedtobesatisfiedwiththosehisadversaryshouldchoose.Besides,hisintentionwasformedtomakethebraveMusketeerallsuitableapologies,butwithoutmeannessorweakness,fearingthatmightresultfromthisduelwhichgenerallyresultsfromanaffairofthiskind,whenayoungandvigorousmanfightswithanadversarywhoiswoundedandweakenedifconquered,hedoublesthetriumphofhisantagonist;ifaconqueror,heisaccusedoffoulplayandwantofcourage.

           Now,wemusthavebadlypaintedthecharacterofouradventureseeker,orourreadersmusthavealreadyperceivedthatd’Artagnanwasnotanordinaryman;therefore,whilerepeatingtohimselfthathisdeathwasinevitable,hedidnotmakeuphismindtodiequietly,asonelesscourageousandlessrestrainedmighthavedoneinhisplace.Hereflecteduponthedifferentcharactersofmenhehadtofightwith,andbegantoviewhissituationmoreclearly.Hehoped,bymeansofloyalexcuses,tomakeafriendofAthos,whoselordlyairandausterebearingpleasedhimmuch.HeflatteredhimselfheshouldbeabletofrightenPorthoswiththeadventureofthebaldric,whichhemight,ifnotkilleduponthespot,relatetoeverybodyarecitalwhich,wellmanaged,wouldcoverPorthoswithridicule.
