Porthospretendedthatthisoccupationwasproofofareflectiveandcontemplativeorganization,andhehadbroughthimawaywithoutanyotherrecommendation.Thenoblecarriageofthisgentleman,forwhomhebelievedhimselftobeengaged,hadwonPlanchet—thatwasthenameofthePicard.Hefeltaslightdisappointment,however,whenhesawthatthisplacewasalreadytakenbyacompeernamedMousqueton,andwhenPorthossignifiedtohimthatthestateofhishousehold,thoughgreat,wouldnotsupporttwoservants,andthathemustenterintotheserviceofd’Artagnan.Nevertheless,whenhewaitedatthedinnergivenbyhismaster,andsawhimtakeoutahandfulofgoldtopayforit,hebelievedhisfortunemade,andreturnedthankstoheavenforhavingthrownhimintotheserviceofsuchaCroesus.Hepreservedthisopinionevenafterthefeast,withtheremnantsofwhichherepairedhisownlongabstinence;butwhenintheeveninghemadehismaster’sbed,thechimerasofPlanchetfadedaway.
