OnthefirstMondayofthemonthofApril,1625,themarkettownofMeung,inwhichtheauthorofROMANCEOFTHEROSEwasborn,appearedtobeinasperfectastateofrevolutionasiftheHuguenotshadjustmadeasecondLaRochelleofit.Manycitizens,seeingthewomenflyingtowardtheHighStreet,leavingtheirchildrencryingattheopendoors,hastenedtodonthecuirass,andsupportingtheirsomewhatuncertaincouragewithamusketorapartisan,directedtheirstepstowardthehostelryoftheJollyMiller,beforewhichwasgathered,increasingeveryminute,acompactgroup,vociferousandfullofcuriosity.
Inthosetimespanicswerecommon,andfewdayspassedwithoutsomecityorotherregisteringinitsarchivesaneventofthiskind.Therewerenobles,whomadewaragainsteachother;therewastheking,whomadewaragainstthecardinal;therewasSpain,whichmadewaragainsttheking.Then,inadditiontotheseconcealedorpublic,secretoropenwars,therewererobbers,mendicants,Huguenots,wolves,andscoundrels,whomadewaruponeverybody.Thecitizensalwaystookuparmsreadilyagainstthieves,wolvesorscoundrels,oftenagainstnoblesorHuguenots,sometimesagainsttheking,butneveragainstcardinalorSpain.Itresulted,then,fromthishabitthatonthesaidfirstMondayofApril,1625,thecitizens,onhearingtheclamor,andseeingneitherthered-and-yellowstandardnortheliveryoftheDucdeRichelieu,rushedtowardthehosteloftheJollyMiller.Whenarrivedthere,thecauseofthehubbubwasapparenttoall.
