           M.deTrevilleemployedthispowerfulweaponfortheking,inthefirstplace,andthefriendsofthekingandthenforhimselfandhisownfriends.Fortherest,inthememoirsofthisperiod,whichhasleftsomanymemoirs,onedoesnotfindthisworthygentlemanblamedevenbyhisenemies;andhehadmanysuchamongmenofthepenaswellasamongmenofthesword.Innoinstance,letussay,wasthisworthygentlemanaccusedofderivingpersonaladvantagefromthecooperationofhisminions.Endowedwithararegeniusforintriguewhichrenderedhimtheequaloftheablestintriguers,heremainedanhonestman.Stillfurther,inspiteofswordthrustswhichweaken,andpainfulexerciseswhichfatigue,hehadbecomeoneofthemostgallantfrequentersofrevels,oneofthemostinsinuatinglady’smen,oneofthesoftestwhisperersofinterestingnothingsofhisday;theBONNESFORTUNESofdeTrevilleweretalkedofasthoseofM.deBassompierrehadbeentalkedoftwentyyearsbefore,andthatwasnotsayingalittle.ThecaptainoftheMusketeerswasthereforeadmired,feared,andloved;andthisconstitutesthezenithofhumanfortune.

           LouisXIVabsorbedallthesmallerstarsofhiscourtinhisownvastradiance;buthisfather,asunPLURIBUSIMPAR,lefthispersonalsplendortoeachofhisfavorites,hisindividualvaluetoeachofhiscourtiers.Inadditiontotheleevesofthekingandthecardinal,theremightbereckonedinParisatthattimemorethantwohundredsmallerbutstillnoteworthyleeves.Amongthesetwohundredleeves,thatofTrevillewasoneofthemostsought.

           Thecourtofhishotel,situatedintheRueduVieux-Colombier,resembledacampfrombysixo’clockinthemorninginsummerandeighto’clockinwinter.
