Trevillehadgraspedtheweaksideofhismaster;anditwastothisaddressthatheowedthelongandconstantfavorofakingwhohasnotleftthereputationbehindhimofbeingveryfaithfulinhisfriendships.HeparadedhisMusketeersbeforetheCardinalArmandDuplessiswithaninsolentairwhichmadethegraymoustacheofhisEminencecurlwithire.Trevilleunderstoodadmirablythewarmethodofthatperiod,inwhichhewhocouldnotliveattheexpenseoftheenemymustliveattheexpenseofhiscompatriots.Hissoldiersformedalegionofdevil-may-carefellows,perfectlyundisciplinedtowardallbuthimself.
Loose,half-drunk,imposing,theking’sMusketeers,orratherM.deTreville’s,spreadthemselvesaboutinthecabarets,inthepublicwalks,andthepublicsports,shouting,twistingtheirmustaches,clankingtheirswords,andtakinggreatpleasureinannoyingtheGuardsofthecardinalwhenevertheycouldfallinwiththem;thendrawingintheopenstreets,asifitwerethebestofallpossiblesports;sometimeskilled,butsureinthatcasetobebothweptandavenged;oftenkillingothers,butthencertainofnotrottinginprison,M.deTrevillebeingtheretoclaimthem.ThusM.deTrevillewaspraisedtothehighestnotebythesemen,whoadoredhim,andwho,ruffiansastheywere,trembledbeforehimlikescholarsbeforetheirmaster,obedienttohisleastword,andreadytosacrificethemselvestowashoutthesmallestinsult.
