           Allnightlongpianosjangledfrombehinddrawnshadesandrowdysongsandlaughterfloatedout,punctuatedbyoccasionalscreamsandpistolshots.Theinmatesofthesehouseswerebolderthantheprostitutesofthewardaysandbrazenlyhungoutoftheirwindowsandcalledtopassers-by.AndonSundayafternoons,thehandsomeclosedcarriagesofthemadamsofthedistrictrolleddownthemainstreets,filledwithgirlsintheirbestfinery,takingtheairfrombehindloweredsilkshades.
