HopewasrollinghighineverySouthernheartasthesummerof1863camein.Despiteprivationandhardships,despitefoodspeculatorsandkindredscourges,despitedeathandsicknessandsufferingwhichhadnowlefttheirmarkonnearlyeveryfamily,theSouthwasagainsaying"Onemorevictoryandthewarisover,"sayingitwithevenmorehappyassurancethaninthesummerbefore.TheYankeeswereprovingahardnuttocrackbuttheywerecrackingatlast.
Christmasof1862hadbeenahappyoneforAtlanta,forthewholeSouth.TheConfederacyhadscoredasmashingvictory,atFredericksburgandtheYankeedeadandwoundedwerecountedinthethousands.Therewasuniversalrejoicinginthatholidayseason,rejoicingandthankfulnessthatthetidewasturning.Thearmyinbutternutwerenowseasonedfighters,theirgeneralshadproventheirmettle,andeveryoneknewthatwhenthecampaignreopenedinthespring,theYankeeswouldbecrushedforgoodandall.
Springcameandthefightingrecommenced.MaycameandtheConfederacywonanothergreatvictoryatChancellorsville.TheSouthroaredwithelation.
Closerathome,aUnioncavalrydashintoGeorgiahadbeenturnedintoaConfederatetriumph.Folkswerestilllaughingandslappingeachotheronthebackandsaying:"Yes,sir!WhenoldNathanBedfordForrestgetsafterthem,theybettergit!"LateinApril,ColonelStreightandeighteenhundredYankeecavalryhadmadeasurpriseraidintoGeorgia,aimingatRome,onlyalittlemorethansixtymilesnorthofAtlanta.
