           Mayof1864cameahotdryMaythatwiltedtheflowersinthebudsandtheYankeesunderGeneralShermanwereinGeorgiaagain,aboveDalton,onehundredmilesnorthwestofAtlanta.RumorhaditthattherewouldbeheavyfightingupthereneartheboundarybetweenGeorgiaandTennessee.TheYankeesweremassingforanattackontheWesternandAtlanticRailroad,thelinewhichconnectedAtlantawithTennesseeandtheWest,thesamelineoverwhichtheSoutherntroopshadbeenrushedlastfalltowinthevictoryatChickamauga.

           But,forthemostpart,AtlantawasnotdisturbedbytheprospectoffightingnearDalton.TheplacewheretheYankeeswereconcentratingwasonlyafewmilessoutheastofthebattlefieldofChickamauga.Theyhadbeendrivenbackoncewhentheyhadtriedtobreakthroughthemountainpassesofthatregion,andtheywouldbedrivenbackagain.

           AtlantaandallofGeorgiaknewthatthestatewasfartooimportanttotheConfederacyforGeneralJoeJohnstontolettheYankeesremaininsidethestate’sbordersforlong.OldJoeandhisarmywouldnotletevenoneYankeegetsouthofDalton,fortoomuchdependedontheundisturbedfunctioningofGeorgia.Theunravagedstatewasavastgranary,machineshopandstorehousefortheConfederacy.Itmanufacturedmuchofthepowderandarmsusedbythearmyandmostofthecottonandwoolengoods.LyingbetweenAtlantaandDaltonwasthecityofRomewithitscannonfoundryanditsotherindustries,andEtowahandAllatoonawiththelargestironworkssouthofRichmond.
