           Theonlytroublewasthatthesoldierscrowdingthestreetsworethewrongkindofuniforms,themoneywasinthehandsofthewrongpeople,andthenegroeswerelivinginleisurewhiletheirformermastersstruggledandstarved.

           Underneaththesurfaceweremiseryandfear,butalltheoutwardappearanceswerethoseofathrivingtownthatwasrapidlyrebuildingfromitsruins,abustling,hurryingtown.Atlanta,itseemed,mustalwaysbehurrying,nomatterwhatitscircumstancesmightbe.Savannah,Charleston,Augusta,Richmond,NewOrleanswouldneverhurry.ItwasillbredandYankeefiedtohurry.Butinthisperiod,AtlantawasmoreillbredandYankeefiedthanithadeverbeenbeforeorwouldeverbeagain.With"newpeople"thronginginfromalldirections,thestreetswerechokedandnoisyfrommorningtillnight.TheshinycarriagesofYankeeofficers’wivesandnewlyrichCarpetbaggerssplashedmudonthedilapidatedbuggiesofthetownspeople,andgaudynewhomesofwealthystrangerscrowdedinamongthesedatedwellingsofoldercitizens.

           ThewarhaddefinitelyestablishedtheimportanceofAtlantaintheaffairsoftheSouthandthehithertoobscuretownwasnowknownfarandwide.TherailroadsforwhichShermanhadfoughtanentiresummerandkilledthousandsofmenwereagainstimulatingthelifeofthecitytheyhadbroughtintobeing.Atlantawasagainthecenterofactivitiesforawideregion,asithadbeenbeforeitsdestruction,andthetownwasreceivingagreatinfluxofnewcitizens,bothwelcomeandunwelcome.
