           ThoughmanynewbuildingshadsprungupintheyearsinceShermanmarchedoutoftheburningtownandtheConfederatesreturned,therewerestillwidevacantlotsaroundFivePointswhereheapsofsmudgedbrokenbrickslayamidajumbleofrubbish,deadweedsandbroom-sedge.Thereweretheremainsofafewbuildingssheremembered,rooflessbrickwallsthroughwhichthedulldaylightshone,glasslesswindowsgaping,chimneystoweringlonesomely.Hereandtherehereyesgladlypickedoutafamiliarstorewhichhadpartlysurvivedshellandfireandhadbeenrepaired,thefreshredofnewbrickglaringbrightagainstthesmutoftheoldwalls.Onnewstorefrontsandnewofficewindowsshesawthewelcomenamesofmensheknewbutmoreoftenthenameswereunfamiliar,especiallythedozensofshinglesofstrangedoctorsandlawyersandcottonmerchants.OnceshehadknownpracticallyeveryoneinAtlantaandthesightofsomanystrangenamesdepressedher.Butshewascheeredbythesightofnewbuildingsgoingupallalongthestreet.

           Thereweredozensofthemandseveralwerethreestorieshigh!Everywherebuildingwasgoingon,forasshelookeddownthestreet,tryingtoadjusthermindtothenewAtlanta,sheheardtheblithesoundofhammersandsaws,noticedscaffoldingsrisingandsawmenclimbingladderswithhodsofbricksontheirshoulders.Shelookeddownthestreetshelovedsowellandhereyesmistedalittle.
